About Us
Hello!
Welcome to House of Happy Threads!
My name is Lucy, the one woman band behind House of Happy Threads.
When my daughter Tilly was born (now aged 9), I was keen to find clothes that were cool, funky and a little off the wall. It wasn’t easy and eventually I found a small business in Scotland that made clothes in one off quirky designs. I couldn’t find another business like this locally, so I decided to do it myself. This was all totally new to me as I had been happily working in magazine publishing for the past 20 years, so I signed myself up for sewing lessons to get started.
I got passionate about sewing pretty quickly, so much so that I signed up for one-on-one sessions with the course teacher so I could improve.
A few friends of mine knew what I was doing and started to see that I was experimenting with personalised Christmas stockings and sacks that I was going to make for my daughter and her friends. Word got around and suddenly I was making them for everyone! I had to start charging them to cover the cost of materials and time, but I quickly saw that people like me were looking for something a little bit different and special to buy rather than the fast fashion and products we see everywhere on the high street.
This idea then developed into kids and adult aprons using designs that I had made by other local independent female businesses, and I then started selling them directly to the public at Greenwich Market which was a great experience.
Then the pandemic hit and the market came to halt, but I was determined to carry on in some way so I set up my website so I could sell direct to people without the need for the market stall. I also wanted to do something to respond to the pandemic so I decided to start making masks with a 20% of profits going to MIND Charity. The reason for choosing MIND was my mother-in-law had mental health issues from a very young age and I saw the effects this had on her and her family - the impact on mental health felt very pertinent as the pandemic escalated. The masks took off and were a great success, even appearing on Riche Anderson from Zoe Ball’s breakfast show / The One Show and the DJ Judge Jules.
Off the back of the success of the mask making, I moved onto my original plan - Kids clothing but using my own quirky designs. As this started to build I discovered a whole community of independent women with their own businesses supporting and working together on Social Media. I started to refine product lines and working with various designers on creating specific designs for my brand. As you can tell I absolutely LOVE Disco, and music in general to be honest. As a family we love going to festivals with our friends, which also comes through on my designs. I work with independent UK based printers who bring my designs to life on athletic fabric. I am thrilled to say that I am making clothing not just for kids but adults too, and it’s wonderful seeing people in your handmade pieces.
We’re are all unique, we’re all individual, and I am here to make sure you never look dull!
Please feel free to email shoud you have any questions.
Lots of love,
Lucy xx
